Dr Jay Birnbaum
Jay is a dermatology consultant with over 35 years of industry experience spanning the areas of discovery research, formulations, clinical research and development, regulatory and marketing. Jay has been involved in the development and commercialization of numerous drug and consumer products and brands. Jay is a co-founder and former chief medical officer of Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, a company developing products in aesthetic dermatology. Prior to starting his own consulting company in 1999, he was with Novartis/Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation, serving most recently as vice president, global project management, with responsibilities for strategic planning and development of the company's dermatology portfolio. Jay has broad relationships in industry and academia, and has published extensively on his work in drug development. His professional affiliations include the American Academy of Dermatology, Society of Investigative Dermatology, and International Society of Dermatology. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Oculus Innovative Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:OCLS) and Excaliard Pharmceuticals (acquired by Pfizer in 2011), and on the Science Advisory Boards of a number of companies including, NanBio Corporation, NexMed Inc., Thesan Pharmaeuticals and Topica Pharmaceuticals. He received a B.S. degree from Trinity College and a Ph.D in Pharmacology from the University of Wisconsin.
Dr Diane Thiboutot
Diane is a Professor of Dermatology at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. She has a dermatology clinical practice at Hershey Medical Center specialising in the care of patients with acne, rosacea and hair disorders. Diane received her medical degree and residency training in dermatology at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and University Hospita. Awards from the Dermatology Foundation and National Institutes of Health fostered her early research career. Diane currently directs an active research program in both basic and clinical research with the support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and industry partners. Her area of research interest is in the regulation of sebum production and the treatment of acne with particular emphasis on the role of retinoids. Diane is the Director of Penn State's Clinical and Translational Research Education Program. She has served for the past four years on the M.D./Ph.D. Steering Committee and was a former co-leader of Hershey Medical Center's Research Team and member of the Institutional Review Board. Dr. Thiboutot is a member of the AOA Honor Medical Society. She is listed in The Best Doctors in America. Diane received her University’s Outstanding Young Investigator Award in 1996 and became an endowed professor in 2005. Diane Thiboutot serves as a reviewer for the NIH as well as several dermatology journals. She has published numerous manuscripts and book chapters relating to acne and hormone metabolism in the skin.
